Control Multiple Power Outlets
Quick Start
Add your smart outlet module in Companion (e.g., TP-Link Kasa, Shelly)
Create buttons in Companion named like
Power: FOH Rack OnandPower: FOH Rack OffTest each button directly in Companion first
Trigger the buttons from Tally
Who This Is For
Teams that want to turn AV equipment on and off remotely without expensive rack power systems.
What You Will Accomplish
Set up outlet control through Companion
Create clearly-named power buttons
Turn equipment on, off, or restart from Tally
Prerequisites
Step-by-Step Setup
In Companion, add the module for your outlet brand (e.g., TP-Link Kasa, Shelly, Tasmota).
Note: For budget setups, TP-Link Kasa smart power strips are the easiest starting point. For rack installations, look at Digital Loggers, APC, or CyberPower managed power units.
Check that the module shows as connected in Companion with the right devices listed.
Create buttons using clear names like:
Power: FOH Rack OnPower: FOH Rack OffPower: FOH Rack Cycle
Press each button in Companion's web interface to make sure the outlet responds correctly.
Send the commands from Tally by using the button names you created.
Safety: Be careful not to accidentally restart your network switch or too many devices at once. Add delays between restart actions so equipment has time to boot up. Always have a way to manually flip power if something goes wrong.
Validation Checklist
Common Issues and Fixes
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Button not found | Name in Tally doesn't match Companion exactly | Check the exact button name (including capitalization) |
| Module connected but outlet won't switch | Wrong password or IP for the outlet | Check device login details in Companion's module settings |
| Unreliable switching | Wi-Fi connection is unstable | Move outlet devices to a wired network connection if possible |
| Equipment fails after restart | No delay between power off and power on | Add a 10-15 second delay between off and on actions |
Rollback / Fallback
Turn off outlet automation in Tally.
Control outlets manually through Companion's web interface.
Add back one outlet action at a time.
