Encoder Setup (OBS/vMix/Hardware/NDI)
Quick Start
In Equipment settings, select your encoder type (OBS, vMix, TriCaster, hardware, or NDI)
Enter the address, port, and password (if needed)
Click Save and connect
Confirm the status shows your stream/recording state
Who This Is For
Teams streaming through OBS, vMix, TriCaster, hardware encoders, or NDI.
What You Will Accomplish
Connect your streaming software or hardware to Tally
See live streaming and recording status
Control start/stop for supported encoders
Prerequisites
Step-by-Step Setup
In Equipment settings, select your encoder type from the dropdown.
Enter the details for your encoder:
OBS: address, port, password
vMix: address, port
TriCaster: address, port, login details if needed
Hardware encoder: address and login details (varies by brand)
NDI monitor: the NDI source name
Save your settings and start the connection.
Verify the encoder status shows as connected with live information updating.
Test the available controls (not all encoders support all actions):
Start/stop stream
Start/stop recording
Verify the status updates correctly
Note: Hardware encoders and NDI monitors are usually read-only — Tally can see their status but can't control them. That's normal.
Advanced Details Show / Hide
NDI setup requires the NDI runtime software to be installed on the Tally computer. You may also need ffprobe (a video analysis tool) for some NDI features.
Hardware encoders that only push a stream (RTMP-only devices) cannot be controlled remotely — Tally monitors their output but can't start/stop them.
TriCaster API support varies by model and firmware version. Check your TriCaster's documentation for available remote control features.
Validation Checklist
Common Issues and Fixes
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| NDI monitor shows no data | NDI software not installed | Install the NDI runtime on the Tally computer |
| TriCaster only partially works | Not all features available on your model | Check your TriCaster firmware version and documentation |
| Hardware encoder is read-only | That's expected for stream-only devices | Use the encoder's own controls; Tally will monitor the status |
| Wrong encoder selected | Setup wizard chose a different type | Change the selection in Equipment settings |
Rollback / Fallback
Set the encoder to monitoring-only mode.
Control streaming from your encoder's own interface until the connection is stable.
